Parents Sponsorship

How to Sponsor your parents and/or grandparents to Canada

Are you a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident looking forward to getting your parents or grandparents to Canada? Luckily, you can sponsor your parents and/or grandparents to Canada. But this raises another question, how to sponsor your parents and or grand parents to Canada permanently.

But before the process, let us break the exciting news to you. Recently, IRCC has declared that it will issue a record number of invitations that is 30,000 invitations starting September 23, 2021. Over a period of 15 days, IRCC will be issuing invitations via email to those who entered the lottery draw in 2020. Please note, no new entries are acceptable in 2021. This policy applies to only those who entered the pool in 2020.

If you are someone who has not made any entry yet but are looking forward to making one, then you will have to wait uptil 2022, perhaps the initial months of the year.

Once you receive an invitation, you will have a time limit of 60 days to submit your application to the IRCC. Here comes the catch. Submission of a complete application is really important. If you happen to submit an incomplete application it will not be accepted and you might get a negative decision within a couple of months. And we are pretty sure, nobody would like their application to be turned down despite an issued ITA. If this would be the case then you will have to re-enter the draw once again starting from ground zero. And then it will be pure luck if the same opportunity knocks at your door once more.

Additionally, IRCC has also declared that the sponsorship applications will no longer be accepted as paper-based but online. Going forward every PR application will be an electronic submission.

IRCC has also introduced temporary changes to the income requirement for 2020. Rather than LICO +30%, the Minimum Necessary Income required for the 2020 will only comprise of LICO and not extra 30%. This is an initiative made by the Canadian government considering the fact that a number of people were financially affected due to business closures and layoffs during the pandemic. Not only this, but while calculating the income for 2020, a person’s EI will also be counted as a part of his/her income.

Coming back to our first question, how to sponsor your parents/grandparents to Canada. Keep reading to learn the special requirements.

Eligibility Criteria - How to Sponsor Parents and or Grand Parents to Canada

To be eligible to sponsor, you must be:

  • a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • at least 18 years of age or older
  • able to maintain the MNI required for the Family sponsorship program
  • committed to financially support your sponsored parents/grandparents and pay back any social assistance that the sponsoring family members have received in the last 20 years.
  • Those who live in Quebec have to sign an additional undertaking agreement.

Also, you will have to provide IRCC the Notice of assessments that you would have received from IRCC in the last three years. This supports your fulfilment of the MNI requirement.

In case you do not fulfil all the above-mentioned conditions to sponsor your parents/grandparents to Canada, you always have a second option. You can apply for a Super Visa. In this visa all you need to demonstrate is one year’s income and it is about 30% less than that required in Parental PR sponsorship.
