International Experience Canada

Canada, with its commitment to global exchange, beckons adventurous souls through the International Experience Canada (IEC) program. This immersive initiative, overseen by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), is a multifaceted journey that intertwines work, travel, and cultural immersion.

The International Experience Canada (IEC) program is a Canadian initiative designed to facilitate the exchange of young individuals between Canada and partner countries, providing them with the opportunity to live, work, and travel in Canada for a temporary period.

IEC gives youth the opportunity to travel and work in Canada for up to 2 years. There are 3 different kinds of work and travel experiences available:

1. Working Holiday category

The Working Holiday category is at the forefront of the IEC program, a passport to boundless adventure. Armed with an open work permit, participants can explore the vast Canadian landscape, finding employment in various locations and gaining exposure to an eclectic array of industries. It’s not just a job; it’s an exploration of Canada’s diverse lands!

This category is for you if

  • you don’t have a job offer
  • you want to work for more than one employer in Canada
  • you want to work in more than one location
  • you’d like to earn some money so that you can travel

The type of work permit you get for a Working Holiday is an open work permit. This lets you work for almost any employer in Canada (some exceptions apply).

You’ll need to get a medical exam first for some jobs.

2. Young Professionals category

The Young Professionals category provides an employer-specific work permit for those with aspirations beyond the ordinary. Participants delve into paid, professional-level positions, contributing to their personal growth and infusing fresh talent into the Canadian workforce. It’s a unique opportunity to craft one’s career path against the backdrop of a dynamic nation.

This category is for you if

  • you have a job offer in Canada that counts toward your professional development
  • you’ll work for the same employer in the same location during your stay in Canada

Under this category, work must be

  • paid
  • not self-employed

The type of work permit you get in the Young Professionals category is an employer-specific work permit.

The job offered must also count toward the candidate’s “professional development.” To count, the job must be classified under Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) category 0, 1, 2 or 3 of the NOC.

A TEER 4 job may qualify if it’s in the candidate’s field of study. When you apply, you’ll need to submit your post-secondary

  • diploma
  • certificate or
  • degree

It must be translated into English or French.

3. International Co-op category

Tailored for the academically inclined, the International Co-op category seamlessly integrates education and experience. Enrolled in a post-secondary institution? This category facilitates internships and work placements, providing participants with a holistic understanding of their chosen field while contributing to Canada’s culture of innovation.

This category is for you if

  • you’re a student registered at a post-secondary institution
  • you have a job offer for a work placement or internship in Canada
  • you need to do this work placement or internship to complete your studies
  • you’ll work for the same employer in the same location during your stay in Canada

The type of work permit you get in the International Co-op (Internship) category is an employer-specific work permit. The internship you’re offered in Canada must be directly linked to your field of study.

Who can Apply?

To participate in International Experience Canada (IEC), your country or territory of citizenship must have a Youth Mobility Agreement (YMA) with Canada.

Some countries only allow you to participate once. Others allow you to participate twice but in different categories. Because each country is different, it’s important that you check to see if you’re eligible to apply.

Application Process

Step 1: Eligibility Check

Before applying, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria, including age, nationality, health insurance, financial capacity, and language proficiency. Check the specific requirements for your country and chosen category.

Step 2: Create an Online Profile

Visit the IEC program portal and create an online profile. Provide accurate and complete information about your personal details, education, work experience, and other relevant information.

Step 3: Submit to the IEC Pool

Submit your completed profile to the IEC pool. Some countries operate on an invitation system, while others may have a first-come, first-served approach. Your profile will be considered for an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Step 4: Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

If selected from the pool, you will receive an ITA. This invitation will specify the category for which you are invited to apply and provide instructions on the next steps.

Step 5: Accept ITA and Apply for a Work Permit

Accept the ITA through your online account and proceed to formally apply for a work permit. Submit additional required documentation, such as a job offer (if applicable), proof of financial capacity, and other supporting documents.

Step 6: Pay the Required Fees

Pay the relevant fees associated with the application process, including the work permit fee. Prompt payment is essential to avoid delays in processing.

Step 7: Wait for Work Permit Approval

After submitting your application, wait for the immigration authorities to process it. Check your online account for updates on the status of your application. Processing times can vary, so be patient.

Fees For Application

The fees you pay depend on the IEC category you’re applying to.

All participants

You must pay the IEC fee. For the 2024 season, the IEC fee is CAN$172.

If you need to give biometrics, you’ll need to pay the biometric fee when you pay your IEC fee.

Working Holiday participants

You must also pay an open work permit holder fee of CAN$100.

Young Professionals and International Co-op (Internship) participants

You don’t have to pay any additional fees, but your employer must pay a CAN$230 employer compliance fee and submit your offer of employment to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Your employer must complete this step before you submit your work permit application.

My Australian PR application took about 5 years to reach an outcome. It was a bit of a complicated case and I might have lost hope had Baksh not been my migration agent. By the time I got introduced to Baksh I had already tried a couple of popular agents and got frustrated by the lack of transparency they demonstrated. Baksh was the polar opposite to those money grabbers. He was always clear with his suggestions, had excellent knowledge of the system and his advice helped navigate through complexities with so much ease. The payments were always discussed and was clarified too. An absolute gem of a professional. By the time I received 2 invites in 2022, I trusted Baksh's recommendation and opted to go for 189 albeit being more complicated than a 491. I am so glad I did. I cannot recommend Baksh and Canoz enough.
