Express Entry CRS

Want to know how to maintain a high CRS score in the Express Entry pool?

In the realm of international immigration, Canada’s Express Entry system is the beacon that guides skilled individuals toward the promise of a new life in one of the world’s most welcoming countries. Navigating this system requires finesse and strategy, particularly in crafting a robust profile that stands out in the competitive pool.

Express Entry is more than a system; it’s a gateway to a brighter future. Launched in 2015, it streamlines the immigration process for skilled workers through a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), assigning points based on factors such as age, education, language proficiency, work experience, and adaptability.

What is Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to evaluate and rank candidates in the Express Entry system. The CRS assigns points to candidates based on various factors, creating a comprehensive profile of their qualifications, skills, and potential to contribute to the Canadian economy. The higher a candidate’s CRS score, the better their chances of receiving an ITA in Express Entry draws.

Here are the key factors of CRS:

  1. Core Human Capital Factors:
    • Age: Younger candidates receive more points, with maximum points typically awarded to individuals between 20 and 29 years old.
    • Education: Points are awarded based on the highest level of education achieved. Higher levels of education result in more points.
    • Language Proficiency: Proficiency in English and/or French is assessed through standardized language tests. Points are allocated based on language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  2. Additional Points for Core Factors:
    • Canadian Work Experience: Points are given for work experience gained in Canada, with more points awarded for longer periods of Canadian work experience.
    • Foreign Work Experience: Work experience gained outside Canada is considered, with points awarded based on the number of years of experience.
    • Skill Transferability: Additional points may be awarded for a combination of factors such as foreign work experience, education in Canada, and language proficiency.
  3. Additional Points:
    • Job Offer: Having a valid job offer from a Canadian employer can significantly boost CRS scores. The offer must be supported by a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or be exempt from the LMIA requirement.
    • Provincial Nomination: A nomination from a Canadian province through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) adds substantial points.
    • Canadian Education: Completing post-secondary education in Canada can contribute to additional points.
    • French Language Proficiency: Demonstrating proficiency in French can earn candidates additional points.
  4. Adaptability Factors:
    • Spouse or Common-Law Partner Factors: Points can be awarded for a spouse or common-law partner’s language proficiency, education, and Canadian work experience.
    • Previous Study or Work in Canada: Having studied or worked in Canada previously contributes to additional points.
    • Having a Relative in Canada: Points may be awarded if the candidate or their accompanying spouse or common-law partner has a close relative living in Canada.
  5. Additional Points for Siblings in Canada:
    • Candidates may receive additional points if they, or their accompanying spouse or common-law partner, have a sibling (brother or sister) living in Canada who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

How to increase your CRS score?

There are a few ways to build a strong Express entry profile and get maximum CRS points. Here’s how:

  1. Maximize Language Proficiency:

Invest time and effort in improving your language skills in English and/or French. Higher language scores can significantly boost your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Currently, IRCC has started the sending out ITAs for French-speaking newcomers! Thus, acquiring a French language proficiency can be a great way to increase your CRS score and can help you apply through the category-based selection rounds!
  2. Gain More Canadian Work Experience:

Under Express Entry, if you have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, you can earn 50 or 200 points in the CRS, depending on the type of job you’ve been offered. It will give you a better chance of being invited to apply in the next round of invitations.
  3. Non-Canadian Work Experience:

While non-Canadian experience may not gain you very high additional points, but it is definitely worth having! Thus, make sure to include all your non-Canadian work experience from your own field in your express entry profile!
  4. Increase your education field:

Currently, there are several educational fields that can help you get a Canadian PR through category-based selection. Picking up a degree and work experience in healthcare occupations, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations, or even Agriculture feild can increase your chances to get a higher CRS through the category-based selection.
  5. Explore Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs):

Many provinces in Canada have specific immigration streams through their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). Investigate whether you qualify for a PNP and, if so, apply. A provincial nomination can be a game-changer for your Express Entry profile. if candidates are nominated by their province of choice, it can get them an additional 600 CRS points!
  6. Leveraging Spousal Skills:

If applicable, include your spouse or common-law partner’s skills in your profile. Their language proficiency and educational qualifications can contribute to your overall CRS score.
