December 9, 2023BY Anindita Banerjee

Express Entry Rounds

After October, IRCC conducted three Express draws in a week!

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has held three back-to-back Express Entry draws after October! In the most recent one, held on December 8, 5,900 candidates received invitations to apply (ITAs). This draw specifically targeted individuals with professional experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related professions.

To be eligible for consideration in this draw, candidates were required to meet a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 481.

Which programs were targeted for the last three draws?

The first draw, held after a long delay, on December 6, was a ‘No Program Specified’ round. A total of 4750 invitations to apply (ITAs) were issued to candidates, and the Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS) was 561.

Since there was no program specified for this draw, invitations to apply may be issued to candidates from the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and Provincial Nominee Program.

The second draw was held on December 7 and it was for the French-speaking category. Under this draw, 1000 permanent residency invitations were sent out. The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score for this draw was 470.

A look at the previous draws

These 3 draws came after a long delay and the reason for it could be a technical glitch that IRCC had announced.

IRCC, on November 14, notified that certain applicants encountered difficulties using the Express Entry Profile Builder, leading to an inability to submit their applications.

On November 16, the department tweeted that the issue had been resolved. However, there were no Express Entry rounds in November.

In October, IRCC had issued three back-to-back draws in the last week of the month. The latest one before December 6 was on October 26, where 3,600 candidates received Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in a category-based selection draw focusing on healthcare occupations. Applicants needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 431.

Before that, on October 25, IRCC extended invitations to 300 candidates in a category-based selection draw targeting those showcasing French-speaking proficiency. A minimum CRS score of 486 was required for consideration.

And even before that, on October 24, IRCC issued invitations to 1,548 candidates in a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)-exclusive draw. Candidates needed a minimum score of 776.

Explaining Express Entry

Express Entry is a competitive immigration system implemented by the Government of Canada to manage and process applications for permanent residency from skilled foreign workers. It aims to attract and select highly qualified individuals who have the potential to contribute to Canada’s economy and society.

The first-ever category-based draw was held on June 28 this year and before that candidates were assessed based on their human capital factors including work experience, professional fields, language skills, education, and age. They were then ranked using an assigned CRS score. After each draw, candidates with the highest CRS scores (according to the cut-off) are issued ITAs, allowing them to apply for permanent residency.

To align with labor market needs and promote the French language, IRCC introduced new category-based selection criteria on May 31. The six new categories include:

  • Healthcare
  • STEM professions
  • Trades
  • Transport
  • Agriculture and agri-food
  • French-language proficiency
