16 New Occupation Categories Eligible Through Express Entry
IRCC transitioned to the new NOC 2021 system from the previous NOC 2016 system. This updated system introduced a new Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) classification in which occupations aree ranked from a level 0 to 5. These levels are not directly equivalent to the current Skill Type levels; however a rough correlation guide is as follows:

Previously, the NOC 2016 selection system included occupations in Skill Type 0, A and B to qualify for Express Entry. In the NOC 2021 selection system, occupations in TEER 0, 1, 2 and 3 qualify for Express Entry. Certain occupations that were previously NOC C have been shifted to TEER 3 and therefore became eligible through Express Entry.
The NOC 2021 selection system now includes several new qualifying occupations including truck drivers, bus drivers, heavy equipment operators, nurse aids, and dental assistants. The full list of new eligible occupations is as follows:
- Payroll administrators
- Dental assistants and dental laboratory assistants
- Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates
- Pharmacy technical assistants and pharmacy assistants
- Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants
- Sheriffs and bailiffs
- Correctional service officers
- By-law enforcement and other regulatory officers
- Estheticians, electrologists and related occupations
- Residential and commercial installers and servicers
- Pest controllers and fumigators
- Other repairers and servicers
- Transport truck drivers
- Bus drivers, subway operators and other transit operators
- Heavy equipment operators
- Aircraft assemblers and aircraft assembly inspectors.
Under the new system, the following occupations have become ineligible:
- Other performers
- Program leaders and instructors in recreation, sport and fitness
- Tailors, dressmakers, furriers and milliners.
The addition of these 16 Express Entry qualifying occupations will surely aid in responding to Canada’s ongoing labour shortages, while also assisting hard-working foreign workers in immigrating to Canada.
