February 2, 2024BY Anindita Banerjee

express entry draw updates

IRCC held it's 4th Express Entry draw of 2024!

On February 1, IRCC held the fourth Express Entry draw for the year 2024. A total of 7000 invitations to apply (ITAs) were issued to candidates for the French language proficiency category. The minimum Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS) was 365.

This draw comes after the one on January 31, which invited 730 candidates from the General category.

Which program was targeted for this draw?

The program specified for this draw was French-language proficiency.

This means that all candidates selected in the draw had met the minimum French language requirements in their Express Entry profiles.

French language skills important in Canada?

French is one of the two official languages in Canada, and you could immigrate to Canada as a skilled French-speaking worker and play an important part in Canada’s economy!

Last year there were six draws targeted at French speakers.

In response to a declining population of French speakers across Canada, the Canadian government is intensifying efforts to attract French-speaking immigrants to communities throughout the country. To encourage the growth of francophone immigration, the government has set specific targets for French-speaking immigrants settling outside Quebec in the coming years.

The Federation of Francophone and Acadian Communities in Canada, on September 12, 2023, emphasized the importance of adopting ambitious targets for French-speaking admissions. They proposed a goal of 12% for 2024, with a minimum threshold of 10%, and a target of 20% by 2036.

In 2024, Canada expects to attract approximately 281,135 economic immigrants, which is over half the annual target percentage. By 2026, this figure will have risen to 301,250.

The Express Entry objective for 2024 will be 110,770 permanent resident admissions, rising to 117,500 immigrants in 2025 and 2026.

Explaining Express Entry

Express Entry is a competitive immigration system implemented by the Government of Canada to manage and process applications for permanent residency from skilled foreign workers. It aims to attract and select highly qualified individuals who have the potential to contribute to Canada’s economy and society.

The first-ever category-based draw was held on June 28 this year and before that candidates were assessed based on their human capital factors including work experience, professional fields, language skills, education, and age. They were then ranked using an assigned CRS score. After each draw, candidates with the highest CRS scores (according to the cut-off) are issued ITAs, allowing them to apply for permanent residency.

To align with labor market needs and promote the French language, IRCC introduced new category-based selection criteria on May 31. The six new categories include:

  • Healthcare
  • STEM professions
  • Trades
  • Transport
  • Agriculture and agri-food
  • French-language proficiency
