Lakeland College has an illustrious standing of being the only inter-provincial college in Canada. The history of its opening can be dated back to November 17, 1913. Factually, the history was written much earlier. By far, the college has undergone numerous name changes. At the inception, the college was Vermilion School of Agriculture (1913). Later in 1963, the name changed to Vermilion Agriculture and Vocational College. The year 1970 brought in a shortened name as Vermilion College which further transitioned into Lakeland College in 1975. A public college serving student population of 7000 and 2223 full and part time students, Lakeland College shows off both its campuses with great pride. Vermilion and Lloydminster are the two campuses of Lakeland College engaged in post-secondary education.
Abiding by the rules of the partnership agreement between the provincial governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan, Lakeland College serves people of both provinces since 1975 efficiently. Since 1928, the College clearly indicated its motto – Ever to Excel. The College sailed through various earth shattering events from the Flu epidemic in 1918, The Great Depression and the World War II. Small colleges located in rural areas are pitted against time and survival. The underpinning survival mantra here is to endeavor to explore and excel.
